About Akron

Set in the hills of the Western Reserve along the Eerie Canal, Akron, Ohio sits in a great spot. The location explains why the city boasts a prosperous history replete with capital-minded industrialists who specialized in everything from rubber to edibles. At the end of the 19th century, Akron became the home of BF Goodrich and the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, making it the "Rubber Capital of the World." Today, the city is a hub for the research and development of polymers. Akron knows how to play, too, and entices visitors yearly with a multitude of things to see and do. Hamburgers, waffle cones and Cracker Jacks are all tied to Akron as well. You can head to Canal Park Stadium to enjoy a few of these homespun treats as well as watch some local baseball courtesy of the Akron Aeros. Besides restaurants, nightlife, museums and the zoo, the city boasts several historical homes and terrific shopping. Quaker Square, former home of the Quaker Oats factory, provides shopping and food in one of the city's most historical sections. If a quick trip out of town is what you're after, the Wolf Creek Winery is not far away. Find more romantic diversions at nearby Cuyahoga Falls, where you can enjoy scenic beauty and dinner for two above the roaring rapids.
