Only 40 minutes by boat from downtown Belize City, Caye Caulker is a mellow little island, with all the standard budget travel amenities on a tiny Caribbean island with a world class reef just offshore. The island is four miles from north to south but the developed and inhabited part is only a mile long, from the Split to the airstrip. Commercial fishing is still very important on Caye Caulker, supplying most of the area's lobsters. Take an early-morning boat (Caye Caulker Water Taxi 501-223-5752) and walk the island's beach village, then return to Belize City in time for dinner.

This 187-acre mangrove island, located at the southern tip of the Drowned Cayes, is only 10 miles east of Belize City. There are many day-trip possibilities to Spanish Lookout Caye including the country's first and only "Dolphin Encounter" program, a beach, kayaks, snorkeling, etc. Diving is one of the favorite activities here. Manatees and dolphins are regularly seen foraging near the island; juvenile reef fish, seahorses, lobster, and mollusks live among the red mangrove roots and seagrass beds. Spend the night or return to Belize City for happy hour.

WESTERN HIGHWAY. There is so much to do, see, eat and drink at Old Belize, that it could be listed in many categories, including recreation, shopping, dining and museums. In addition to a beach, swimming lagoon, zip line, waterslide and other water sports, Old Belize offers the Cultural and Historical Center, a 45-minute tour through a thousand years of Belizean history, with fascinating relics and simulations. There's also a boat marina, helipad, and excellent restaurant, bar and grill. The whole complex is located five miles out of the city on the Western Highway and actually gets more Belizean clients than tourists; definitely worth the trip. Bring a bathing suit and enjoy at least half a day.
