Held each fall, this gathering of the United Tribes is one of the largest of its kind in the United States, drawing in tens of thousands of folks for four days of celebrating Native American culture through traditional music, dancing and the like. Representatives from more than 70 distinct tribes participate, and some 1,500 performers are scheduled each year. The Powwow is held in the Lone Star Arena.

Since 1879, cowboys from all over the West -- the world, even -- have gathered in Mandan to saddle up and show off their skills in the saddle. These days, doing well isn't just a matter of pride, it also about vying for a piece of the more than $50-K in prize money. Of course, the weekend is not all about spurs and clouds of dust. Indeed, the Miss Rodeo Mandan Pageant is also held at this time, the winner of which earns the right to go on and compete in the statewide Miss Rodeo North Dakata Pageant in Minot. Festivities also include a parade, live music, and free arts and crafts exhibits.
