They call it a blowout because it's lots of music packed into a short amount of time -- in just four days, there are approximately 250 performances in some 20 venues. Happily, attendees find musical styles that appeal to everyone. The event begins with an exciting launch party at downtown's Majestic Theatre Center. A one-time fee (and mandatory wristband) gets you in each night.

This late-summer favorite gives more than 1½ million amateur and professional car junkies their annual fixes. Featuring more than 30,000 collector, custom, muscle, and street cars lined up for 16 miles, Dream Cruise takes riders down Woodward Avenue from Ferndale to Pontiac. Along the way, the communities of Berkley, Birmingham, Huntington Woods, Pleasant Ridge, and Royal Oak join in the fun by featuring live music, street parties, swap meets, and all the food you could ever want. The public is encouraged to use free public transport (SMART buses) to enjoy the event.

This is a powerboat-racing event on the Detroit River. Held in mid-summer, the tournament hosts antique boats as well as the racing boats. Qualifyfing heats are all day Friday and Saturday morning; races follow on Saturday afternoon and Sunday. General admission seating is available at Chrysler/Henderson Park and Memorial Annex Park, but you can see the races for free from the public beach on Belle Isle.
