With more than 1000 performances of some 130 shows and over 77,0000 tickets sold, this is the largest fringe theater festival in North America, and is second in the world only to Edinburgh's (the original festival, in Scotland). For the duration of the eleven-day event, the entire city seems to be consumed by theater -- it's all anyone talks about. And that's a big part of the fun of fringing, hearing what other people think is good (or awful) and developing a somewhat spontaneous approach to your own experience. Venues range from theatres to tents; most are in Old Strathcona. The EIFF headquarters also has several outdoor stages, plus vendors offering food, beverages, and arts and crafts. Advance tickets are sold at the Fringe Box Office (lobby of the TransAlta Arts Barns, 10330 84 Ave) for a couple of weeks prior to the festival start date, but tickets at the door are payable with cash only.

One of the highlights of Edmonton's film festival is "24/One," in which filmmakers have 24 hours to complete a seven-minute movie. The results are always interesting, and frequently astonishingly good. There's also a series of midday short films that include lunch and discussion. The rest of the program is comprised of about 40 feature length films plus a host of shorts from all over the world, attended by a wide range of filmmakers such as John Waters, Norman Jewison, Werner Herzog and Jorgen Leth. Venues are cash only at the door and include Empire Theatres at Edmonton City Centre (10200 102 Ave), Garneau Theatre (8712 109 St), Princess Theatres (10337 82 Ave), and Metro Cinema at the Citadel Theatre Complex (9828 101A Ave). Advance tickets are also available through the EIFF Offices, 10816A 82 Ave.

A three-day celebration of Edmonton's (and indeed, Canada's) multicultural heritage, this lively festival features more than 50 pavilions devoted to some 70 international cultures. Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, tastes and textures of Guatemala, China, Chile, Poland, Korea, Turkey, Uganda, Tanzania, Germany, France and the Caribbean; sample native foods like empanadas, cassava chips, pierogis, jerk chicken, egg rolls, bulgogi, salted herring, kielbasa and crepes. Foods must be purchased with food tickets, most items are about three to six tickets. Admission to the festival is free, but bring a canned good or two to donate for Edmonton's Food Bank. And don't plan to drive -- there's no parking anywhere nearby, so take public transportation or a park 'n ride service.

The four-day Folk Music Festival is a well-established event that draws an audience of about 80,000 every year. Started in 1980, the festival is managed almost entirely by a crew of about 2000 volunteers. At least half of the annual performer lineup is Canadian, and genres reach far beyond the "folk" tag to include bluegrass, Celtic, blues, gospel and world music, with some country and R&B thrown in for good measure. Past acts that have graced the stages range from Linda Ronstadt, Loreena McKennitt and Norah Jones to Chumbawamba, Bruce Cockburn and David Gray to Iris DeMent, The Blind Boys of Alabama, and Susan Tedeschi. Bring a blanket to sit on, and be aware that there is no parking at the festival site. Your best bet is to park and ride from the Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre ($2/person).

Canada's national holiday is celebrated with a fun family festival at Louise McKinney Riverfront Park, followed by a fireworks display over the Great Divide Waterfall on the High Level Bridge. Start out the day with rides and games, a petting zoo, kid's crafts and live music. Once the sun has set, the fireworks begin -- this is one of the best shows you'll ever see. Parking is a nightmare so plan to take public transportation. The best public viewing spots for the fireworks display are: the Alberta Legislature Grounds, Louise McKinney Riverfront Park (9529 Grierson Hill NW), Ezio Farone Park (west entrance to High Level Bridge on 109 St N), Dantzer's Hill (below Queen Elizabeth Park), Government House Park (Groat Rd and River Valley Rd).

During this 13-day festival, works from a broad range of Canadian and international artists are displayed throughout nearly 30 traditional and non-traditional spaces (banks, hotels, art galleries, libraries, government buildings) in and around Sir Winston Churchill Square. The square itself is transformed into a festival site, with a plethora of arts and crafts booths, food and beverage vendors, activities for kids, artist demonstrations, and concerts. Buskers unite! Every summer, the acrobats, clowns, mimes and musicians who perform on street corners and in train stations the world over converge on Edmonton for an entertaining ten-day celebration of the buskers' art. About 1000 individual outdoor performances cheer onlookers, and another handful of new shows enthrall on the Maclab Stage of the Citadel Theatre. For younger audience members, there's even a Kids' World complete with activities, games and child-centered performances. Sir Winston Churchill Square is abuzz with activity and laughter for the entire ten days, rain or shine. And when the hat is passed, chip in generously!
