FLAGSTAFF. Promoted as the "best preserved meteorite crater on earth," this spectacular site indicates what happened when a meteor struck earth at 40,000 mph. The residual hole spans almost a mile and descends to 550 feet. Guided tours explore the phenomenon, and observation points afford views from its rim. The visitors center offers a wide-screen movie theater, a tribute to astronauts, and a gift shop. Plus, the on-site museum presents a host of fascinating exhibits about space, meteors, planets, and physics.
