About Yuma

During the 1820s, California-bound homesteaders forded the Colorado River near what is now the Arizona-California state line. Eventually this crossing (first discovered by 18th century Catholic missionaries) hosted a military fort and the first permanent settlement of the Great California Gold Rush. Thanks to the settlement's proximity to several rivers, steamboats and ships also brought passengers and goods from all over the world to this cozy corner of the Wild West. Soon after, the railroad came calling, and the town became an important stopping-point for supply cars heading west. In those days of Mexican occupation, Yuma was first known as Colorado City, then Arizona City, and finally, Yuma (following a Territorial Legislature vote). Today, Yuma's quaint Main Street recollects the town's frontier past, with tiny shops and street-side eateries housed in authentic Southwestern-style structures. In addition, a park marks the point where the historic settlement sprang up. Now, in place of rowdy saloons, brothels, and casinos, visitors find the likes of Lutes Casino, a one-time grocery store that's Arizona's oldest pool hall and domino parlor, and Yuma Landing, a restaurant and lounge that serves up healthy helpings of Southwestern salmon and chicken fried steak. Other noteworthy sites include the historic Territorial Prison, home to some of America's most notorious criminals from 1876 till 1909; Yuma Crossing State Historic park, which commemorates five centuries of area river crossings; Sahiti Camel Farm, a conservation area housing Arabian camels, desert foxes, and Asian water buffalos; and the Century House Museum, home of intrepid settler E. F. Sanguinetti and a fascinating repository of Yuma history.
