About Calgary

From quiet beginnings as an outpost for the North West Mounted Police, the city of Calgary gained prestige after the railroad pushed through, linking the east and the west. Farming and ranching were prominent then, capitalizing on the wide expanses of prairie. In the early part of the century, oil was discovered, and the city's fortunes changed forever. An influx of money and people pushed Calgary's growth, and the city was largely built in a generation, thanks to oil and the money it produced. Much of that wealth was directed into the city, endowing it with recreational and cultural facilities to rival its shining office towers. Today the city of Calgary is filled with exciting attractions from the wildly popular Calgary Zoo to historic Heritage Park Calgary. Entertainment is easy to come by in Calgary. Whether it.s high energy hockey at the Calgary Flames or high stakes gambling at Casino Calgary, there is truly something for everyone. Oil still drives the city, as does technology, and the money remains as well, giving the city of Calgary a sophistication that rivals Canada's more established cities. It's also beautiful, a gateway between the prairies and the awesome grandeur of the Canadian Rockies. It's home to the University of Calgary and a proud cowboy culture that revels in the annual Calgary Stampede celebration. In a few incredible decades, the city has transformed itself into a world power and presence, evidenced in part by its hosting of the 1988 Winter Olympics, emblematized by the majestic Calgary Tower. Friendly, magnanimous, young, and well-educated, it shows no signs of faltering in that climb.

Did you know?

Calgary hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics, which were expanded to 16 days and 46 events. Highlights included Katarina Witt skating to a second consecutive Olympic gold medal, Yvonne van Gennip's post-hospitalization win of three speed skating events, and Matti Nykänen's spectacular ski jumping. This was the first Winter Olympics for Canada, and the specially constructed state-of-the-art facilities now function as a popular attraction and training center. Perhaps the most thrilling experience in Calgary is here - a bobsled ride on the actual track used by the Olympic competitors. In the winter, it's like being on a snowy, icy roller coaster; in the summer, the sleds are on wheels, so there's no excuse to miss out!
