CROSSING THE BORDER
A passport or an original birth certificate is required to cross the Canadian border. If you do not have your original birth certificate, you could be detained for up to 4 hours while they confirm your birth place. Beginning January 23, 2007, US citizens travelling by air into Canada require a passport or other accepted document. Forms of identification required to cross the border and tips to make your border crossing as easy as possible

US aliens are required to bring an Alien Registration Receipt Card as proof of residence. ? Be prepared with as much identification as you can get. If traveling by car, have your car registration papers ready for inspection, as well. ? A new question being asked at some border crossings is if someone has given you a package to bring into Canada for them. This is the same question airlines have been asking at the check-in counter for a few years now. Be prepared to unwrap any gift wrapped presents you have with you. Car Search ? Indications are that EVERY car is being searched. While someone searches your car, you will be asked to stand nearby, but far enough away from the car itself. Cleaning the inside of your car beforehand is recommended, it will reduce the amount of time you are detained at the border.
