About Akron

Location, location, location. It couldn't be better than Akron, one of the first towns along the Erie Canal nestling in the hills of the Western Reserve. From travelers passing through to industrialists seeking the ideal spot to manufacture and ship their goods and entrepreneurs looking to capitalize on them both, Akron's location made it a boom town in the 19th century. When it became home to BF Goodrich and Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, it earned the distinction of being the nation's rubber capital. As the rubber business faded, the city's attention turned to the research and development of polymers, making Akron a world-renowned center for polymer advancement. It is appropriate that the Inventors Hall of Fame can be found here, for before polymers, Akron introduced us to the hamburger, the waffle cone and the caramel-covered popcorn snack known as Cracker Jacks. Enjoy this ballgame favorite along with some peanuts at Canal Park Stadium, home to the Akron Aeros baseball team. If there isn't a game, there is still plenty to do with historical sights, restaurants and museums aplenty. Shoppers will love the stores of Quaker Square, housed in the former Quaker Oats mill building. For those on business, the John S. Knight Center contains facilities to accommodate most engagements.
