About Belize City

Although a relatively small city with a population of about 60,000, Belize City offers guests an interesting stay. The capital city enchants visitors with its ruggedly beautiful landscape and laid-back Caribbean lifestyle. Belize is home to the only manually operated swing bridge in the Americas. Daily, a dozen or so men turn the bridge enough to allow large boats to pass. The bridge serves as the central navigational landmark in the city. Historic stops of interest include the Baron Bliss Lighthouse, which features the tomb of one-time patron Baron Bliss of Portugal, St. John's Cathedral, the Coastal Zone Museum, and the Marine Museum. Bird watching at the Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, crocodile tours at the Bermudian Landing Community Baboon Sanctuary, or a visit to the Belize Zoo should appeal to animal and nature lovers. The Image Factory, a local art gallery, draws art aficionados interested in viewing the best artwork of Belize natives. Shoppers can wander through the National Handicraft Centre and peruse the many handmade crafts created by local artisans, and the Belize Commercial Center offers excellent Creole and Latin American foods as well as fresh fruits and vegetables. The area offers several restaurants, from Chinese to Italian, but guests should definitely stop by a renowned favorite, JB's Watering Hole, even if just to tip back a bottle of Belize's national beer, Belikin. The city is also a gateway to other interesting Belize endeavors: the famous Blue Hole (a popular scuba diving spot), the lovely Cayes coral reefs, and the Mayan ruins, Altun Ha, located about 31 miles north of the city.

Did you know?

The largest jade carving ever found in the Mayan region was discovered in a tomb at Altun Ha, in the Belize District. This artifact is known as The Jade Head.
