This is Cranberry Country. The Radisson Hotel Rockland is located in the heart of the nation's flourishing cranberry harvesting industry. Native Americans used to call the bitter berry "sassamanesh" and "imam". German and Dutch settlers called it the "crane berry" because the plant's blossom resembles the tip of a crane's bill. The name stuck, and today the humble cranberry is a staple of the American's celebratory meals. Legend has it that along with wild turkey and succotash, the Pilgrims served cranberries at the first Thanksgiving in Plymouth Massachusetts. Americans consume over 400 million pounds of cranberries per year, 20% of that during a single week - Thanksgiving week, of course.

Cranberries grow on vines in impermeable beds layered with sand, peat, gravel and clay. These beds, commonly known as "bogs" were originally made by glacial deposits. Some cranberry bogs are over 100 years old and still produce today. In nearby South Carver, ride through an 1800-arcre cranberry plantation on Edaville Railroad's narrow guage railway. The plantation hosts festivals at harvest time, and during Christmas. You can taste the heritage of this uniquely American berry all year long.
