About Manchester

In 1804, a fellow named Benjamin Prichard opened Manchester's first cotton spinning mill. By the 1830s, the single mill had bloomed into an enormous complex that would become one of the world's foremost manufacturing centers for the next 100 years. Indeed, by the turn of the 20th century, products made at Amoskeag Mills and bearing "Made in Manchester" labels appeared in cities all over the world. Although the mills met their demise during the Depression, the city itself persevered, morphing from a traditional mill town to a true commercial and industrial center. Now, Manchester is home to such major players as Citizens Bank, General Electric, Sylvania, and Verizon, as well as to institutes of higher learning like UNH-Manchester, St. Anselm and New Hampshire College. This combination of successful enterprise and youthful vigor has helped the city become a cultural hub of the region, boasting an intrepid arts community and rich nightlife and dining scenes. You need only travel down bustling Elm Street on a weekend evening to see that the years have been kind to New Hampshire's Queen City. Today's Manchester even boasts a revitalized Amoskeag Mills complex, now a designated historic site with workspaces, offices, restaurants and shops. Indeed, Manchester lives up to its motto as a place "Where History Invites Opportunity."

Did you know?

"Just sign it there, somewhere under Mr. Hancock's..." Nearby Merrimack proudly lays claim to being the final resting place of Irish-born Dr. Matthew Thornton, whose signature was last on the Declaration of Independence. Dr. Thornton also drafted New Hampshire's first constitution in 1775.
