About Kitchener

Formerly named Berlin, Kitchener is located in southwestern Ontario. The city has a unique heritage of both German and Mennonite origins, and the area still has a large Mennonite community. Guests can tour Mennonite farms by trolley or horse and buggy to find out more about this interesting way of life. The climate in Kitchener is pleasant and includes four distinct seasons. Guests can enjoy a variety of activities throughout the year, from hiking on the Walter Bean Grand River Trail to downhill skiing at the Chicopee Ski Club. The Grand River is known throughout Canada as a premier fishing spot, and lovely parks are sprinkled throughout the city, including Victoria Park, which boasts beautiful rose gardens and a historic Clock Tower. Art enthusiasts should make a point to visit the Homer Watson House and Gallery, Watson's home place-turned-museum and gallery that features the work of Canada's first famous landscape artist. Shoppers will be immediately drawn to the Christkindl Market at City Hall where they can select specialty gift items and munch on authentic German goodies. The Farmers Market has also been a Kitchener tradition for over 130 years. Each Saturday, area farmers bring their fresh produce, meat and home-baked goodies to the downtown area along Frederick and Duke Streets. A charming and community oriented place, Kitchener offers guests picturesque landscapes and a refreshing change of pace.
