About Windsor
The southernmost city of Canada, Windsor is located south of Detroit, Michigan, and is considered a sister city to its American neighbor. The area economy is built largely around the automotive industry, as Windsor is known as Canada's automotive capital. Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors all have production facilities here. Along with a prosperous present, this city also boasts an interesting history. Ideally situated on the waterfront between two great nations, Windsor was a strategic point during the War of 1812. Visit Fort Malden or the John Freeman Walls Historic Site to learn more about Windsor's past, which included dangerous rum running and the Underground Railroad. Historic homes and interesting architecture pepper the city, and many are fully restored and afford guests the opportunity to step back in time. Visit the Francois Baby House or the McGregor-Cowan house. The arts minded can catch a theater performance at Mackenzie Hall or stroll the outdoor murals located in the "Ford City" area. For shopping and dining, Windsor offers several options. The City Centre area downtown includes a variety of cafes and shops while the "Little Italy" area on Erie Street is lined with boutiques, bakeries and delis. The city comes alive after dark, as it's known for its vibrant nightlife and casino scene. In fact, one of its whispered nicknames is "Tijuana North." On the "tamer" side, bird lovers flock to Windsor during the spring and fall to watch the many varieties of migrating birds that pass through the skies above. Exceptional lookout points include the nearby Point Pelee National Park and the Jack Miner Bird Sanctuary.
