About Providence

Founded along the Providence and Seekonk Rivers as a refuge for religious dissenters, Providence became the capital of Rhode Island in 1901. Today, Providence is a cultural and academic hub. Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Johnson and Wales Culinary Institute and Trinity Repertory Company are all vital forces in the community. The city is also blessed with a rich historical heritage, boasting more than 20% of the country's National Historic Landmarks. First-time visitors are drawn to the charming four-acre Waterplace Park and Riverwalk; as well as the shops, cafés and galleries on Wickenden Street, the Italian section on Federal Hill, and the hip College Hill area.

Did you know?

A stroll through Federal Hill is reminiscent of traveling through a small town in Italy. Each year, the stripe running down the middle of Atwell Avenue is repainted in the traditional colors of the Italian flag: red, green and white. A huge pigna, a pinecone that serves as an Italian symbol of abundance and quality, hangs above the street.
