This joint occupies a beautifully renovated red-brick building, its interior decorated with old signs, a bi-plane flown by the Bartles & James boys, and a vintage car "crashing through" the front wall. Meanwhile, ceiling fans and chandeliers hang from high black ceilings. Behind the pub-like bar are colorful, stained-glass beer ads, including one for La Crosse's famous son, Old Style. Order a pint of the house's specially-brewed Alfunbräu beer to enjoy with a terrific pizza topped with everything from artichoke hearts and fresh garlic to ripe olives and shrimp. Burgers and sandwiches are also available.

DOWNTOWN. Rumor has it that the owner of Digger's Sting worked with the syndicate before moving back home to La Crosse and opening this restaurant, named for a guy he knew who got "stung" in NYC. The decor was inspired by Robert Redford's "The Sting" ­ dark wood paneling, dim lighting, an old National Cash Register behind the bar, and black and white photos of Mr. Sinatra. As for dinner, BBQ baby back ribs, a 12-oz. sirloin with mashed red-potatoes, or a prime rib and scallops platter are never bad ways to go. Dinner reservations are recommended, capiche?

Customers step back a few decades when they stop by for a bite, placing orders with carhops on roller-skates and digging into classic American fare like cheeseburgers, chili dogs, cheese fries, and onion rings.
