WESTWOOD. Tucked away on the north campus of UCLA is this, one of the nation's best sculpture collections. More than 70 works by well-known artists like Calder, Noguchi, Rodin, Matisse, and Zuniga populate five acres dedicated to outdoor art. Maintained by the university's Hammer Museum, the collection grows each year. A quiet oasis, the garden is open year-round and is a lovely destination for a contemplative stroll.

BEVERLY HILLS. This nearly two-mile strip of green runs 14 blocks along Santa Monica Boulevard, from Doheny Drive to Wilshire Boulevard and then along Wilshire to Whittier, right through the heart of Beverly Hills. The site of several annual events, the park is also notable for other reasons. Between Camden and Bedford Drives is a large cactus garden, one of the largest collections in the world. A jogging path runs the length of the park, past statues and flower gardens. At the southwest end, the 1931 Electric Fountain runs through a changing display of color effects every eight minutes.

SAN MARINO. A day at the Huntington is a treat, even for kids. Among its many attractions, botanical gardens are the major draw, and they include more than 120 acres of lawns and themed gardens, not to mention more than 14,000 kinds of plants. The original residence, then, houses a wonderful art collection whose specialty is British, French, and American works of the 18th and 19th centuries. The prestigious library boasts incredibly rare manuscripts and books, including a Gutenberg Bible. The Rose Garden Tea Room invites guests to enjoy a traditional afternoon tea buffet, and a cafe with patio seating is available. Special programs and classes, many of them family-oriented, are offered weekly.
