Having undergone a major renovation that was completed in 2009, this sprawling art museum, nicknamed the MALI, holds Peru's premier collection of art. Located in Parque de la Cultura in downtown Lima, the museum's collection of objects covers 3,000 years and ranges from colonial furnishings and pre-Columbian ceramics and textiles to religious paintings, modern sculptures, contemporary paintings, and photography. There is also plenty of space dedicated to rotating exhibitions.

Hours: Tue-Fri 10am-8pm; Sat 10am-5pm

Lima's most historic military installation is in the port of Callao, not far from where international cruise ships dock. The Spanish-built pentagonal fortress was designed to prevent pirates from attacking Spanish galleons; later it was used in the War of Independence and the War of the Pacific against Chile. The fort is still in use by Lima's marines, and a military museum, Museo del Ejercito, occupies much of the space with a variety of displays of war and military artifacts, including guns, cannons, and paintings of important military figures.

An iconic Lima structure, this fifth-century adobe pyramid sits amid skyscrapers in the heart of the residential community of Miraflores. The adobe pyramid served as a commercial, political and ceremonial center for multiple civilizations over the last 1,500 years. Mummies from the Lima and Wari cultures have been found during excavations of the site. One of the top restaurants in Lima, also called Huaca Pucllana, can be found adjacent to the site and is also a popular tourist attraction.
