Take a step back in time when you board the reproduction of the Mayflower. You'll be amazed that the nation's founders made the rigorous trip on such a basic boat, and you'll truly appreciate their bravery and determination. Passengers and ship's crew are portrayed by talented interpreters and provide plenty of interesting facts and historical information. Dockside exhibits offer additional insight into the Mayflower's arduous voyage in the year 1620. The area also includes a reproduction of a 17th-century shallop and ship's boat.

AIRPORT - PYM. [Closed for restoration.] Built in the mid 1700s, this home is located along the city's North Street. Throughout the years, this small home was filled with generations of Spooners. Visitors to this two-story house are greeted with original furnishings, china, paintings and artifacts that reveal what home life was like for this family. In 1954, James Spooner willed the home and all its contents to be a museum for the enjoyment of the general public. A small garden is also part of the house tour during warmer months.

One of the nation's oldest colonial burial grounds, Burial Hill is located behind First Church at the top of Leyden Street. The burial plots are situated at one of the settlements once occupied by the Pligrims, and the deceased include notable forefather William Bradford and other original settlers. The hill also provides outstanding views of the waterfront and surrounding area. A few old cannons are also located on the premises.

AIRPORT - PYM. This historic home is famous for being Plymouth's oldest, dating back to 1640. Be sure to note the cross summer beam construction as well as the leaded glass windows and paneled walls. The home is now a gallery, filled with a wide array of stoneware, handmade jewelry, sculpture, glasswork, wood work and porcelain pottery. During various seasons of the year, guests are also treated to rotating exhibitions by talented painters. The house also has a small museum, accessible via a nominal admission fee.

AIRPORT - PYM. This historic site bears the distinction of housing America's first grist mill and dates back to 1636. The current mill has been rebuilt on the original site, and visitors are greeted by the sight of a large water wheel turning just as it did during the days of the area's original settlers. If you visit during the spring, primarily April and May, you can view the fish ladder that enables thousands of herring to swim upstream for spawning purposes. Historic walking tours are offered at the mill; tours take visitors to the Brewster Gardens, the historic waterfront area, Plymouth Rock and Burial Hill. Before leaving, visit the gift shop and purchase some freshly ground cornmeal to take home with you.

Plimoth Plantation is dedicated to recreating the life and times of the original colonists. The entire plantation is set in 1627, and costumed interpreters bring individual Pilgrims and Native people to life. Visit a Wampanoag homesite or listen to a Pilgrim talk about the hardships she encountered during her arduous journey. The Mayflower II is also part of the plantation's offerings, and combined tickets for both the ship and plantation are available.

Seeing this famous rock is a must-do during your visit to Plymouth. It's the one spot that everyone will ask if you visited. It's not really that grand or awe-inspiring, but it is a legendary part of the nation's past. The rock has had a somewhat hard life as it's been transported from spot to spot throughout the centuries and has been cracked and chipped at by souvenir hunters. In 1920, it found a safe and secure resting spot though, under a canopy designed by notable architects McKim, Mead and White.
