About Racine
First discovered by French explorers in 1699, the area at the mouth of the Root River grew into a booming French trading post in the 1700s and eventually became known as 'Racine,' the French term for "root." During the 18th and 19th centuries, the area was settled by New York colonists, and when Wisconsin was granted statehood in 1848, the area was formally recognized as the city of Racine. The Yankees' various names for the city - Chippecotton, Kipi Kawi and Port Gilbert - simply didn't have the same ring as the old French moniker. Racine blossomed into a thriving port city and is known for its participation in the Underground Railroad, which passed through the city. In fact, Racine's strong opposition to slavery led the Wisconsin Supreme Court to declare the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 unconstitutional in 1854. Its history as a place of refuge continued into WWI, when countless immigrants, particularly Danes, Germans and Czechs, settled here after leaving their home countries. Today, Racine claims to have the largest concentration of Danes in North America, and its significant Danish population has made the city famous for kringle, a traditional Danish pastry. Another Racine claim-to-fame is the S.C. Johnson Wax Company, a family-owned corporation headquartered here since 1886. In addition, many of the city's buildings were designed by famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright, including the SC Johnson Center and the Wingspread Conference Center. Currently, over 80,000 people call this beautiful city home, while the city's low-key feel, myriad interesting activities and friendly residents make every visitor feel welcome. From learning how to blow glass to chowing down on cherry kringle to enjoying lovely views of Wind Point Lighthouse, there's something for everyone in beautiful Racine, Wisconsin.
