About Durham
The city of Durham, NC is located 20 miles northwest of Raleigh and is considered the former apex of the tobacco industry. This notoriety started when Washington Duke returned from the Civil War and began producing tobacco. His sons later created the American Tobacco Industry and eventually donated money to Trinity University, later renamed Duke University in their honor. Durham boasts a vibrant downtown area where there's something to do every night. Head to the historic Brightleaf Square, a street lined with historic tobacco warehouses that have been transformed into shops and restaurants. Concerts are held there all summer long. Ninth Street provides a rather eclectic downtown shopping area where unique boutiques and old favorites line the street. Here you can find anything from clothing to custom shoes to nightlife. During basketball season, you're hard-pressed to visit Durham without seeing evidence of Duke basketball. It's the hottest ticket in town, and students will camp out for days just to get one. Renowned for its history, shopping, universities and nightlife, Durham, North Carolina is a top notch travel destination in the Southeast!
