DOWNTOWN. A complex comprised of three separate spaces. The ground floor, Rock, is kitted out in granite and onyx, with splashes of purple light to liven things up just a bit. One floor up is Wood, a tranquilly decorated spot with giant lifelike murals of forests and wood surfaces everywhere. The rooftop is Grass, a plush indoor/outdoor space that incorporates the living green stuff as part of the décor, along with tiki huts and the stars above. There's a nice dance floor on the second floor, and plenty of cozy seating everywhere, making Rockwood + Grass ideal for a sophisticated night out.

DOWNTOWN. When it opened in the late 1990s, Billiards Digest magazine named the Charlotte Room one of the top ten best new pool rooms in North America. The place has continued to live up to the initial kudos, offering a classy space with several tables and impressive food and beverage menus (no greasy wings and canned Schlitz here!). If the pool tables are occupied or you simply want a break, you'll find a number of other diversions in the form of board games, everything from chess to Boggle to Risk. Some Friday nights host live bands or magic shows.

Since 1947, the Horseshoe has been entertaining Toronto's thirst for live music with a roster of musicians as varied as Arlo Guthrie, the Ramones, the Cramps, the Police, Johnny Lang, 10,000 Maniacs, Billy Bragg, and Soul Coughing. Well known for keeping up with the times, the performance schedule has morphed over the years, from county and rockabilly, to folk and reggae, to punk and metal. You won't find any ridiculously sweet, neon-hued cocktails or frilly salads topped with foie gras and caviar. You will find the basics, like beer, sake, whiskey and absinthe to drink, and toast with Chez Whiz, Marmite or Nutella, chips and salsa and sandwiches to eat. WEST TORONTO. The Academy is an upscale pool hall, set in former factory space that was once home to the Brunswick Balke Collender Company, manufacturers of pool tables and accessories. The place has about 20,000 square feet of renovated space divided into several different rooms, each with a different (although equally classy) ambience. Among the numerous pool tables are several hand-carved antiques that were actually built in the factory a hundred years ago. The Academy has an amazing stock of beverages: over 350 wines, 60 grappas, 20 vintage ports, 130 cognacs and over 100 international beers. The food is good, too. Call ahead to confirm hours, as this is a hugely popular spot for private events.
