This annual festival celebrates the art of the photographic image at more than 200 venues around town. In art galleries, shopping centers, banks, bars and restaurants, hotels and banks you'll see an amazing variety of pictures from some talented local, national and international photographers. Larger installations are staged at diverse venues such as the MOCCA parking lot, the Drake Hotel and the St. Patrick subway the station platform. There's also a film festival -- most screenings take place at the NFB cinema (150 John St).

Canada's biggest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender film festival showcases some 275 films and videos from around the world. You can catch movies like King and the Clown (Korea), The Picture of Dorian Gray, Puccini for Beginners, and Outrageous!, along with installments of TV series such as Dante's Cove. Venues include Isabel Bader Theatre (93 Charles St W), ROM Theatre (100 Queen's Park), and the NFB Cinema (150 John St). There are a few free screenings at the NFB, too.

Some 150 buildings, most not ordinarily open to the public, swing the front doors open for a day or two during this event. The list of included buildings changes a bit each year, but historic structures have included the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto (1891), the Malt Kilns Building & Tunnel, the Gooderham Flatiron Building, Montgomery's Inn (1830), and the University of Toronto's Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library. Significant contemporary structures have included the Design Exchange and the Ontario College of Art and Design's Sharp Centre for Design. Many buildings are open one or both days, 10 am to 5 pm, but some buildings have more limited hours. The highly anticipated North by Northeast is a music lover's nirvana. Bands from all over Canada, and as far away as London, England and Chapel Hill, North Carolina, converge on Toronto for a four day musical extravaganza. Mostly, these are emerging bands, many of which go on the much wider stardom. Past performers include Dinosaur Jr., Fountains of Wayne and Urge Overkill, but you could see anything from folk to punk. There's also a film festival that showcases movies about music, like the Glastonbury documentary, Kurt Cobain: About a Son, and Rock It to Rio (about Franz Ferdinand's South American tour). You can pay the cover charge at each individual venue, or purchase a wristband which permits you entrance to all venues Friday-Sunday.

The main stage is at Nathan Phillips Square; other venues include the Savoy Bistro Lounge (253 Victoria St), Live @ Courthouse Market Grille (57 Adelaide), and the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts (145 Queen St W). Fashioned after the successful Parisian event, Nuit Blanche is a one-night, all-night celebration of public art. There are three zones, each individually curated: Bloor --Yorkville, McCaul and University, and Queen Street West. About 30 temporary installations are commissioned for this night, mostly very contemporary and colorful. Venues change each year, but might be anything from a billboard to a car wash to a museum, and lineups are the norm. There are all sorts of additional activities and plenty of food -- you will be up all night.
