EAST TUCSON. Probably the healthiest among similar places in town, Xoom is locally owned and uses no sweetened juices or sorbets, or other such ingredients, in any of their 40+ smoothies. Most are fortified with added "Xoomers" ­ specially formulated vitamin and protein supplements that boost the nutritional value of your smoothie. Tasty options include the Berrystardust, a mixture of apple juice, strawberries, blueberries, agave nectar and frozen yogurt with protein and energy Xoomers; and the Black and Blue, a combination of soymilk, blackberries, blueberries, granola, frozen yogurt and a double protein Xoomer.

NORTHEAST. Although it's changed hands a few times over the years, Jonathan's Cork has maintained a loyal following, both for its rustic, retro décor and its non-standard steakhouse menu. The atmosphere is decidedly old-Southwest, with beehive fireplaces and old DeGrazia prints on the walls, but the food is decidedly more modern. In addition to great steaks and fresh fish, guests enjoy a selection of more uncommon meats such as ostrich, buffalo and venison. Most are char-broiled, sautéed or blackened to bring out the inherent flavors. There's also a good choice of beers and liquors.

NORTHEAST. The number one rule for dining at Pinnacle Peak is "No Ties Allowed." Should you arrive sporting one, it will be promptly chopped off and added to the ever-growing collection hanging from the ceiling. Folks love the fun Old-West ambience here, and they love the food just as much. Most order mesquite-grilled steaks (this is the home of the Cowboy Steak, after all), but seafood is well-prepared, too. Dinners come with salad, beans and bread, but you can also order sides of corn-on-the-cob and mashed potatoes. Polish off your meal with a bowl of warm apple or cherry cobbler.

NORTHEAST. This is the kind of place everyone wishes their hometown had. Something Sweet serves dessert. And a few coffee drinks, teas and other non-alcoholic beverages. But the main thing is dessert: over 10 different cakes, more than 15 pies, 7 cheesecakes, and an assortment of other goodies. Perhaps the pinnacle of indulgence, the "Oh My God, You've Got to be Kidding" Éclair is absolutely huge with a thick layer of the chocolate on top. The place functions as a second home for lots of folks, and with late hours, free WiFi and three customer computers, a slew of board and card games, a free book exchange, and all those fabulous desserts, it's no secret why.

Cinnamon buns, sweet rolls ­ whatever you prefer to call them, Gus Balons makes the best in Tucson, if not the state (some people claim the best in the country, and they just may be right...). This baby is huge, really huge. It's got just the right amount of cinnamon, for a spicy but not overwhelming flavor. And it's also slathered with enough frosting so that every bite has that punch of sweet gooeyness. It's perfect. The no-frills diner/café also serves up buttery fried eggs, French toast made from homemade rustic white bread, and good hot coffee. Other times of the day, you may want to sample a slice of pie, but choosing which one may be daunting. There's usually about 20 different varieties baked every day, from chocolate peanut butter banana to fresh peach to crumb-topped pumpkin.

NORTHEAST. The focal point at McMahon's is a glassed-in wine room, filled to capacity with over 25,000 bottles. The decor is upscale, contemporary Southwestern, bolstered by local art, an abundance of dark woods, and a stylish cigar bar. Beef is king, and McMahon's steaks are regarded by many as being among the best in Tucson. Even the burger is high-end, topped with Gruyere and porcini and morel mushrooms. Sides range from caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, and creamed spinach to regionally influenced dishes like scalloped potatoes with green chiles and tumbleweed onions. Desserts are made in-house and are very, very good.

Owned by Bob McMahon's highly regarded Metro Restaurants group (which includes other Tucson favorites McMahon's Prime Steakhouse and Firecracker), Old Pueblo does the Southwestern concept very well. Authentic, atmospheric décor contributes to the overall experience, which might start with a bowl of creamy poblano soup or rattlesnake eggs (bacon wrapped jalapenos stuffed with smoked shrimp and cream cheese). For the main course, try an Arizona spiced flat iron steak with garlic butter and green chile mashed potatoes, or the 16-ounce "El Jefe" NY strip steak with huitlacoche bordelaise. Tex Mex favorites like fajitas, enchiladas and tacos round out the menu, but if you're hankering for a burger, try the OPG, topped with roasted green chiles, pepper jack cheese and guacamole. Great margaritas and a huge tequila list, too.
