Each summer, Winnipeggers celebrate the joy of the musical with Rainbow Stage. The outdoor stage at Kildonan Park has seen the best of musical theater since the 1950s: My Fair Lady, Oliver, the Sound of Music, Bye Bye Birdie, West Side Story, The King and I, The Music Man and Brigadoon, to name just a few.

If you visit Winnipeg in late June, one thing's for sure: your toes will be tapping to the sounds of jazz greats like the Dave Brubeck Quartet, Pink Martini, Herbie Hancock, Kenny Garrett, Madeleine Peyroux, Holly Cole and Kurt Elling. Well-known blues artists make appearances as well, like Jonny Lang, John Lee Hooker, Jr., and Guitar Shorty. In addition to about 60 concerts, there is a series of free lunchtime performances in Old Market Square. Venues include The Forks Market (1 Forks Market Rd), Pyramid Cabaret (176 Fort St), Windsor Hotel (187 Garry St), King's Head Pub (120 King St), Mondragon Bookstore (91 Albert St), lounge at the Fairmont Hotel (2 Lombard Pl), Exchange Events Centre (291 Bannatyne).

North America's second largest fringe festival takes place right here in Winnipeg. The numbers are impressive: the 12-day event draws more than 69,000 people, who attend some 1000 indoor performances by over 125 theatre companies from around the world. The center of it all is Old Market Square in the Exchange District, where you'll find the main ticket and info center, food, beverage and souvenir vendors, a kids stage, and entertainment ranging from buskers to bands (Daily, Noon-Midnight). Most theater venues are within a five-minute walk of the square; tickets are available (cash only) at each venue.

A film festival for kids, Freeze Frame screens dozens of independent films and videos (documentaries, animated shorts, features) from around the world. A healthy proportion of films hail from Canada and many are in both English and French. There are also various workshops and film discussions, and participants can even make their own claymation videos. Venues include the Globe Cinema, the IMAX Theatre and Prairie Theatre Exchange (all at Portage Place Mall, 393 Portage Pl), and the University of Manitoba (Downtown Aboriginal Education Centre, 11 The Promenade).

Voyageurs (French fur traders who plied their trade throughout this region) rendezvoused at "the forks" each year for a few days of revelry, and this massive event commemorates their efforts to create a permanent settlement. Western Canada's largest winter event includes everything from snow sculptures, ice climbing, music, dance, games, a fun run, a formal ball, and tons of food (French, of course). There are numerous competitions, too, testing the mettle of modern-day would-be voyageurs. Most events are at Fort Gibraltar. The best way to enjoy the festivities is to purchase a button which allows you daily admission to the grounds and most events.
